Environmental Sciences (UG Standard) Syllabus

Assistant Scientific Officer (ASO) Professional Knowledge

1. Fundamentals of Environmental Science

Definition and Scope: Multidisciplinary nature of environmental sciences.

Environmental Chemistry: Chemical composition of the atmosphere; Chemical processes in water and soil; Stoichiometry; Gibb’s energy; Chemical potential; Chemical equilibria.

Environmental Microbiology: Prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms; Role of microorganisms in waste treatment and biogeochemical cycles (Carbon, Nitrogen, Phosphorus).

2. Ecology and Biodiversity

Ecosystem Dynamics: Structure and functions of ecosystems; Energy flow; Food chains and food webs; Ecological pyramids.

Population Ecology: Characteristics of population; Population growth curves; r and k strategies.

Biodiversity: Levels of biodiversity; Hotspots of biodiversity; Threats to biodiversity; In-situ and Ex-situ conservation; Red Data Book.

3. Environmental Pollution & Monitoring

Air Pollution: Primary and secondary pollutants; Acid rain; Ozone layer depletion; Green house effect and Global warming; Monitoring of $PM_{2.5}$, $PM_{10}$, $SO_x$, and $NO_x$.

Water Pollution: Water quality parameters (pH, EC, DO, BOD, COD); Eutrophication; Groundwater contamination (Arsenic, Fluoride).

Soil and Noise Pollution: Sources, effects, and control measures.

Instrumentation: Basic principles of GC, HPLC, AAS, and Spectrophotometry used in pollution monitoring.

4. Waste Management (Rules & Techniques)

Solid Waste: Functional elements of MSW management (Generation, Storage, Collection, Transport, Processing, Disposal).

Hazardous & E-Waste: Categorization and handling rules.

Bio-Medical Waste: Segregation (Color coding) and disposal methods.

Latest Rules: Solid Waste Management Rules 2016; Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 (as amended up to 2024-25).

5. Environmental Policy and Law

Indian Legislation:

The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.

The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.

The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

UP Specific: Role and functions of the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB); Consent to Establish (CTE) and Consent to Operate (CTO) procedures.

International Conventions: Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement, Montreal Protocol.

General Aptitude Syllabus :

1. Quantitative Aptitude (Numerical Ability):

Number System: Fractions, Decimals, HCF & LCM, Surds and Indices.

Arithmetic: Percentage, Profit & Loss, Simple & Compound Interest, Ratio & Proportion, Average.

Time & Work: Pipe & Cisterns, Time, Speed & Distance, Boats and Streams.

Mensuration: Area and Volume of 2D and 3D shapes (Cylinder, Cone, Sphere, etc.).

Data Interpretation: Bar Graphs, Pie Charts, Tables, and Line Graphs.

2. Reasoning Ability (Verbal & Non-Verbal):

Analogy: Semantic, Symbolic, and Number Analogy.

Classification: Odd one out (Words/Numbers).

Series: Number Series, Alphanumeric Series, and Pattern Completion.

Logic-based: Syllogism, Blood Relations, Direction Sense, Coding-Decoding.

Puzzles: Seating Arrangement (Circular/Linear) and Ranking.

Non-Verbal: Mirror images, Paper folding, and Embedded figures.

3. General Awareness (India & Uttar Pradesh) :

Current Affairs: National and International events of the last 6–12 months.

UP Special (High Weightage): Geography, History, Culture, and Economy of Uttar Pradesh; Major environmental projects and policies in UP.

Environment & Ecology: Basics of Climate Change, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and National Pollution Standards.

Static GK: Indian Constitution (Basic), Geography, and General Science.

4. General English & Hindi Grammar:

English: Basic Grammar (Parts of Speech), Tenses, Synonyms/Antonyms, One-word Substitution, and Error Detection.

Hindi (सामान्य हिंदी): तद्भव-तत्सम, विलोम, पर्यायवाची, मुहावरे, लोकोक्तियाँ, और शुद्ध-अशुद्ध वाक्य।
