Written Test on 80 % Civil Engineering + 20 % computer basics
- Engineering Mechanics- System of forces, free body diagrams, equilibrium conditions, friction, centre
of gravity of regular sections, basic kinematics (velocity and acceleration), work, energy and power. - Strength of Materials- Stress and strain, elastic constants, bending moment and shear force in simply
supported beams, simple bending theory, torsion of circular shafts, columns and buckling (basic
concepts). - Structural Engineering- Types of structures, statically determinate trusses and beams, loads on
structures (dead, live, wind), reinforced concrete members (beams, slabs, columns – introduction),
basic steel sections and connections. - Concrete Technology- Ingredients of concrete, properties of fresh and hardened concrete, nominal
mix design, curing methods, basic quality control tests, introduction to reinforced concrete, elementary
limit state design concepts. - Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics- Properties of fluids, pressure measurement, Bernoulli’s theorem
(simple applications), flow through pipes, open channel flow (uniform flow, hydraulic jump), pumps
and turbines (introduction). - Hydrology and Irrigation- Hydrologic cycle, rainfall measurement, runoff and flood basics, duty and
delta, crop water requirements, types of irrigation systems, introduction to canals, dams and spillways. - Geotechnical Engineering- Soil formation and classification, index properties, compaction,
permeability, effective stress, shear strength of soils, basic bearing capacity, types of foundations, pile
foundations (introduction), slope stability (conceptual). - Transportation Engineering- Highway alignment and surveys, geometric elements of roads, flexible
and rigid pavements (basic), traffic signs, signals and road markings, introduction to railway and
airport engineering. - Surveying and Geomatics- Chain surveying, levelling, compass and plane table surveying, basic
theodolite work, elementary traversing, introduction to GPS and GIS. - Environmental Engineering- Water supply systems, basic water treatment processes, sewerage
systems, primary and secondary wastewater treatment, solid waste management, air pollution basics,
noise pollution basics. - Computer Related Knowledge (for Civil Engineering Labs)
